Pretending to be Nationwide informing about £2500 transaction to Booking.com and account blocked. This is a scam not Nationwide.

28 Sept 2021

Exactly as described above, I received a call from 'Nationwide fraud team' saying I'd had a payment of £2500 to booking.com from my current account. I work in fraud, so when the caller asked for my customer ID, I told her I'd check, and call back. I called nationwide and lo and behold, no outbound call, no notes and no suspicious booking com transactions. The real fraud team' advised that if they have a concern, their first contact would be via text message, automated call and then by letter, they don't just call out like that.

Very credible, British sounding lady called asking to verify a duplicate transaction for £2499 to Booking.com (I've made none) Very clever and disarming, talks for a bit and starts Security. First ask - you customer number (you know the one used for internet banking).... I asked how to verify they were calling from Nationwide - she said match the phone number to the number on your card (they can obviously fake this, but it was still different) Hung up, called Nationwide directly, no record of the call or the supposed transaction. Do not be fooled, this is an extremely sophisticated effort. If you hear a red flag, immediately end the call.

Had a call from thin number claiming to be Nationwide and they listed off suspicious transactions before asking for more details to escalate a security investigstigation, I asked them to call back at a more convenient time then immediately called Nationwide fraud line and they knew nothing about the call or suspicious transactions. As a trained ethical hacker I know what social engineering looks like and was rightly suspicous of this call so gave no details.
