What is really scary is how much effort is made to make this look genuine, the amount of positive comments, that you seriously have to consider before you dismiss is frightening. It is ofcourse a SCAM but getting more and more dangerous.

Genuine call IF you’re in the middle of an online transaction. It’s to give you a 4 digit security pin. If you’re online, you’ll be expecting it. If it comes out of the blue and you’re not in the midst of an online Halifax transaction, it is probably a scam. You then need to report it to your bank.

Message left on my phone from this number regarding setting up a new card and if I hadn't asked for a card to be set up to press a key...I just hung up. I then called Bank of Scotland and they confirmed that the number isn't related to them or any of their related businesses....it's a scam number.

It's a scam. It's a call pretending to be automated online payment setup verification, in my case from Halifax setting up a new online payment. If you get a call, voicemail or text you are not expecting call your bank on the number published on their website not by returning the call.

It _is_ Halifax (and possibly others in same group like Lloyds, BoS etc) - phone system is insecure but if you're not expecting a call then yeah, hang up and immediately call the bank by their published number because it may be somebody using your card or gained access to your online banking etc. If you are expecting the call then the number wouldn't be a shock.

A genuine, automated Halifax Bank call to verify an attempted log-in or a change to an account, via their banking app. If you haven't just tried to log into your account, or set up a payment etc. and get one of these calls, maybe someone else might be trying to access your account from elsewhere !!!!!.....
