A hidden number is calling me: what it means and what to do
The screen shows «hidden number», «private», or «unknown» instead of the caller phone number. It is one of the situations that breeds the most distrust: among the more than ۰ reports from the NoCall community, calls with no visible identity show up frequently.
1. Who calls with a hidden number
LegitimateDoctors, company switchboards, security forces, and public services protecting their privacy.
SuspiciousScammers hiding their number so you cannot identify them, look them up, or call back.
2. Should I answer?
If you are expecting a call (doctor, courier, interview), answer cautiously. If you are not expecting anything, you can let it ring: anyone with something legitimate to tell you will leave a voicemail or reach you through another channel.
3. What never to do
- Never give personal, banking, or SMS-code data to a hidden number.
- Never follow urgent instructions («make a transfer now», «install this app»).
- Do not call back: with no visible number, there is nothing to verify.
4. Blocking hidden calls
On iPhone, «Silence Unknown Callers»; on Android, the Phone app spam filter. If you still get suspicious calls from visible numbers, look them up on NoCall and read what to do about a suspicious call.
