1I have had multiple calls from this same phone number. My experience is similar to previous commenters. The caller purports to be an AT&T rep who will credit my account for being a long time customer. They have your address and phone number and they offer a Confirmation Number as well. They then simply request that they can verify who they're speaking with in order to apply this credit, by providing the last four of my Social Security Number. I did not provide this to them and said that they should know that I'm a client as they've called me. I asked to have a phone number that I could call back through the AT&T system to verify that I was actually speaking with someone from AT&T. They even offered to let me speak with their supervisor and I was given over to another person who also sounded fairly legitimate. As ultimately they could not provide me any kind of proof that THEY were truly who they say they were, I did not provide the information they were seeking and I'm glad of this fact as I have since called AT&T directly and asked whether they had some sort of credit similar to this going on and that this was the way they were handling these credits. The AT&T rep said that they NEVER EVER ask for any confirming information when they have called us (this is a SURE sign that you are dealing with a SCAMMER!) - only if WE call THEM do they need to verify that we're truly who we say we are! BTW, the actual AT&T rep said that the number shown 888– 944– 0447 is likely truly an AT&T toll-free number, But that the scammers can fake this number on their system so that it appears that you're actually being called from a legitimate number and if you happen to call her back you actually will get AT&T 's you're more likely to believe that they are for real. This same actual AT&T rep said that I could/should go to the app store and download a free application from AT&T called AT&T CallProtect. This application was created precisely so that it could make certain that when you receive these kinds of calls on your cell phone that you were made aware of this fact and that the true source of the call is represented (the application supposedly ties into a database of known scammers to alert you of this fact). This DEFINITELY is a SCAM!!! DO NOT PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION TO THEM!!! I’d also advise you to mention this scam to family and friends so they are not caught up in it.
