A private number is calling me: what it means and what to do

Your screen shows "No Caller ID," "Private," or "Unknown" instead of the caller's number. It's one of the situations that makes people most suspicious, and calls with no visible number come up often in reports from the NoCall community.

1. Who calls with a hidden number

  • Legitimate callers: Doctors' offices, company switchboards, law enforcement, and some government agencies that keep their numbers private.
  • Suspicious callers: Scammers who hide their number so you can't identify them, look them up, or call them back.

2. Should I answer?

If you're expecting a call (a doctor, a delivery, a job interview), answer carefully. If you're not expecting anything, you can let it ring: anyone with something legitimate to tell you will leave a voicemail or reach you another way.

3. What never to do

  • Never give personal or bank details, or codes you received by text, to a hidden caller.
  • Never follow urgent instructions ("send a payment now," "install this app").
  • Don't try to call back: with no visible number, there's nothing to check.

4. Blocking hidden calls

On iPhone, turn on "Silence Unknown Callers"; on Android, use the spam filter in the Phone app. On many landlines, dialing *77 turns on anonymous call rejection. If you still get suspicious calls from visible numbers, look them up in the NoCall spam numbers directory and read our step-by-step guides for suspicious calls.

Who can call me with a hidden number?

Doctors' offices, companies with switchboards, law enforcement, and some government agencies may call with a hidden number for privacy. But scammers use it too, so you can't identify them or call back.

Can I find out who's calling from a hidden number?

Not directly: the number isn't sent to your phone. If the call is legitimate, the caller will leave a message or identify themselves. If hidden-number calls turn threatening or harassing, keep a log of dates and times and report them to your local police department. If a caller tried to scam you, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; for unwanted robocalls, you can also file a complaint with the FCC at 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).

How do I block hidden-number calls?

Both iPhone and Android let you silence or block calls from unknown or hidden numbers in your phone settings. You can also turn on NoCall's automatic filtering.
