Scam calls try to trick victims into sharing personal or banking information or sending money. Callers often impersonate banks, utilities, public bodies, or technical support. Never share sensitive details on the phone unless you placed the call yourself.
Phone scams (vishing) have one goal: to take your money or data by posing as a trusted organisation. The most common variants in South Africa are the fake Microsoft or telecom technician, the supposed bank employee asking for passwords or SMS codes, and the "child in trouble" fraud requesting an urgent transfer. No legitimate organisation will ever ask for passwords, PINs or verification codes over the phone. When in doubt, hang up, look up the official number yourself and call back. If you have shared banking details, contact your bank immediately and report it to the police.
