A hidden number is calling me: what it means and what to do
The screen shows "No Caller ID", "Private" or "Unknown" instead of the caller's phone number. It is one of the situations that causes the most distrust: in the reports from the NoCall community, calls with no visible number come up often.
1. Who calls with a hidden number
- Legitimate — Clinics, company switchboards and some organisations that keep their own numbers private.
- Suspicious — Scammers who hide their number so that you cannot identify them, look them up or call them back, including people posing as bank staff, police officers or government officials.
2. Should I answer?
If you are expecting a call (a clinic, a courier, a job interview), answer with care. If you are not expecting anything, you can let it ring: anyone with something legitimate to tell you will leave a voicemail or contact you another way.
3. What never to do
- Never give personal or banking details, or codes received by SMS, to a hidden number.
- Never follow urgent instructions ("make a transfer now", "install this app", "approve this Singpass request").
- Do not call back a number they give you during the call: with no visible number, there is nothing to verify, so look up the official number yourself.
4. Blocking hidden calls
On iPhone, use "Silence Unknown Callers"; on Android, the spam filter in the Phone app. The ScamShield app also lets you check and report suspicious calls and messages. If you still get suspicious calls from visible numbers, look them up on NoCall and read our guides on suspicious calls.
Who can call me with a hidden number?
Clinics, companies with switchboards and some organisations may call with a hidden number for privacy. But scammers use it too, so that you cannot identify them or call them back.
Can I find out who is calling from a hidden number?
Not directly: the number is never sent to your phone. If the call is genuine, the caller will leave a message or identify themselves. If the calls turn into threats or harassment, make a police report through SPF e-services.
How do I block hidden-number calls?
Both iPhone and Android let you silence or block calls from unknown or hidden numbers in the phone settings. You can also turn on NoCall's automatic filtering.
