Before giving details by phone: a printable card

A large-print sheet to keep by the phone: eight simple rules taken from the advice of INCIBE, the Policía Nacional and the Guardia Civil, and the numbers to call in Spain. Print it or save it as a PDF and give it to your parents or grandparents.

In the print dialog, pick your printer or "Save as PDF". It fits on one A4 or Letter sheet.

Before giving details by phone

Keep this sheet by the phone. If in doubt, give no details at all.

  1. At the slightest doubt, hang up. It is not rude. Say "I'll call you back" and end the call.

  2. Call the official number yourself. The one on your card, your bank book, your bill or the official website. Never the one given in the call or the text.

  3. Never give passwords, PINs or codes. Not even the ones you receive by text. Your bank never asks for them by text, and your PIN is not given even to bank staff.

  4. Do not install anything you are asked to. No apps or programs to "fix" a problem or to give access to your phone or computer.

  5. Hurry is the warning sign. A blocked account, a fine, a surcharge in 24 hours, a prize: no genuine caller makes you decide on the spot.

  6. The name on the screen can be fake. A fake text can appear in the same thread as the real messages from your bank or the Tax Agency.

  7. The Tax Agency, Social Security, the DGT and Correos do not ask for bank details or payments by text. If a message does, it is a scam.

  8. If in doubt, ask someone you trust first. A relative or a friend. You do not have to decide anything in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

What is 017?

It is INCIBE's "Tu Ayuda en Ciberseguridad" helpline: free and confidential, every day from 8:00 to 23:00. It also answers on WhatsApp at 900 116 117 and on Telegram at @INCIBE017.

Who do I call if I have already given my details?

Your bank first, on the official number on your card or its website, to block whatever is needed. Then report it to the Policía Nacional (091 or a police station) or the Guardia Civil (062). INCIBE's 017 can guide you through the next steps.

Can my bank call me and ask for a code?

No. INCIBE reminds that banks never ask by text for your passwords or card details, and the Guardia Civil advises never to give your PIN, not even to bank employees.
