Is this text from Agencia Tributaria real?

Paste the web address from the message to see whether it belongs to Agencia Tributaria. Below: how Agencia Tributaria really contacts you, what the fakes look like and what to do.

How Agencia Tributaria really contacts you by SMS

Agencia Tributaria’s official domains:

  • agenciatributaria.gob.es
  • agenciatributaria.es

A real Agencia Tributaria message only takes you to these domains or to an address that ends in one of them, such as www.agenciatributaria.gob.es. Any other address is fake.

Spanish public bodies also use addresses that end in .gob.es.

What about the sender name?

NoCall’s data doesn’t record which sender name Agencia Tributaria uses, so we don’t list one. It wouldn’t settle the question anyway: a sender name can be faked, and a fake can land in the same conversation as Agencia Tributaria’s real messages.

What the fake Agencia Tributaria messages look like

Fake tax agency messages usually say that:

  • you are owed a refund and must claim it through a link;
  • you have a debt or a penalty that you must pay today;
  • you must update your details or you will lose the refund.

And the link usually:

  • contains “agenciatributaria” but is a different domain, such as agenciatributaria-[word].com or [word]-agenciatributaria.[ending];
  • is shortened (bit.ly, tinyurl.com and similar), so you can’t see where it goes;
  • ends in an unusual extension, such as .top, .xyz or .click.

What to do

  1. Don’t tap the link and don’t reply to the message.
  2. If you want to check, open the Agencia Tributaria app or type its address yourself.
  3. If you tapped the link and entered card or bank details, call your bank right away to block them.
  4. If you entered passwords, change them and turn on two-step verification.
  5. Report the message and the number so that others are warned.

Where to report a scam text

A name or a number on the screen proves nothing

Scammers can make a text message show a brand’s name or someone else’s number (spoofing), and the fake can even land in the same conversation as the real messages. What gives a fake away is where its link goes.
