A withheld number is calling me: what it means and what to do

Instead of the caller's number, the screen shows "Withheld", "Private number", "No Caller ID" or "Unknown". It's one of the situations that breeds the most distrust: in the large database of reports from the NoCall community, calls with no visible number come up again and again.

1. Who calls from a withheld number

  • Genuine callers — GP surgeries and hospitals, company switchboards, the police and public services protecting their privacy. Anyone can withhold their number on a single call by dialling 141 first.
  • Suspicious callers — scammers hiding their number so you can't identify them, look them up or call them back.

2. Should I answer?

If you're expecting a call (from your GP, a courier or about a job interview), answer with care. If you're not expecting anything, you can let it ring: anyone with something genuine to tell you will leave a voicemail or get in touch another way.

3. What never to do

  • Never give personal or bank details, or codes you receive by text, to a withheld number.
  • Never follow urgent instructions ("make a transfer now", "install this app").
  • Don't try to call back: with no number to see, there's nothing to check. On most landlines, 1471 tells you the last caller's number, but not when it was withheld.

4. Blocking withheld calls

On iPhone, use "Silence Unknown Callers"; on Android, the spam filter in the Phone app. On a landline, ask your provider what call-blocking options it offers. If you still get suspicious calls from visible numbers, look them up on NoCall and read our step-by-step guides.

Who can call me from a withheld number?

Doctors, companies with switchboards, the police and some public services withhold their numbers for privacy. But scammers do it too, so that you can't identify them or call them back.

Can I find out who's calling from a withheld number?

Not directly: a withheld number is never shown on your phone. If the call is genuine, the caller will leave a message or say who they are. If withheld calls turn threatening or won't stop, tell your provider and contact the police on 101 (999 in an emergency). If a withheld caller has scammed you, report it to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud) on 0300 123 2040, or to Police Scotland on 101 if you're in Scotland.

How do I block withheld-number calls?

iPhone and Android can both silence or block calls from unknown or withheld numbers in the phone settings, and you can also turn on NoCall's automatic filtering. If they're unwanted sales calls, register your number free with the Telephone Preference Service and report persistent callers to the ICO.
