A private number is calling me: what it means and what to do

Instead of the caller's number, the screen shows "No Caller ID", "Private" or "Unknown". It's one of the situations that makes people most wary: in the NoCall community's large database of reports, calls with no visible number come up often.

1. Who calls from a hidden number

  • Legitimate — Doctors and medical centres, company switchboards, Police and some public services protecting their privacy.
  • Suspicious — Scammers hiding their number so you can't identify them, look them up or call them back.

2. Should I answer?

If you're expecting a call (your doctor, a courier, a job interview), answer carefully. If you're not expecting anything, you can let it ring: anyone with something legitimate to tell you will leave a voicemail or get in touch another way.

3. What never to do

  • Never give personal or bank details, or codes sent to you by text, to a hidden number.
  • Never follow urgent instructions ("make a transfer now", "install this app").
  • Don't try to call back: with no visible number, there's nothing to check.

When in doubt, follow the advice of Consumer Protection's Scamwatch: stop, check and report.

4. Blocking hidden calls

On iPhone, turn on "Silence Unknown Callers"; on Android, use the spam filter in the Phone app. If you still get suspicious calls from visible numbers, look them up on NoCall and read our situation guides on suspicious calls.

Who can call me from a hidden number?

Doctors, companies with switchboards, Police and some public services call from hidden numbers for privacy reasons. But scammers use them too, so you can't identify them or call them back.

Can I find out who's calling from a hidden number?

Not directly: the number is never sent to your phone. If the call is legitimate, the caller will leave a message or say who they are. If hidden-number calls turn threatening or won't stop, talk to your phone provider and report them to NZ Police on 105, or call 111 if you're in danger.

How do I block calls from hidden numbers?

Both iPhone and Android let you silence or block calls from unknown or hidden numbers in the phone settings. You can also turn on NoCall's automatic filtering.
